Canada | PR Visa | PNP | The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced ‘Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador’: New immigration pathway.

Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador, a proposed immigrant route under the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) was announced recently by the provincial government. The new pathway is set to launch on January 2, 2021.

This pathway’s aim is to attract highly educated and skilled immigrants with expertise working in sectors such as technology, where local training and recruiting have been outpaced by increasing demand.

The Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Honourable Andrew Furey and, the Minister of Immigration, skills and Labor, the Honourable Gerry Byrne made the announcement on November 18, 2020 at the Emera Creativity Exchange at the Signal Hill Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The new pathway has been requested by employers in high-growth sectors needing specialized expertise because their efforts to hire locally have not fulfilled the rising need for professional and qualified employees.

The other provinces account for up to 70 percent of all the immigration applications approved through the pathways similar to the newly announced immigration pathway i.e. Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador.

Who are eligible under Priority skills?

Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador will be available to individuals with one or more of the following advanced technical or specialist credentials in priority fields such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT,) agriculture, aquaculture, health care and ocean technology.

  • Masters or Ph.D. graduates from Memorial University (St. John’s, NL). Their studies have been completed in the last 3 years.
  • At least one year of experience for exceptionally qualified candidates in a highly skilled and in-demand occupation.

Additional Requirements

  1. Language ability-
    • Either IELTS or CELPIP exam taken in the last 12 months
    • A score equivalent to the Canadian Language Benchmark(CLB) Level 5 or more.
  2. All candidates must be 21 years old at least at the time of application submission

The candidates with working experience in the following occupations are considerable for in-demand occupations

Engineers and Developers:

  • .NET Developer
  • AI Developer
  • Biomedical Engineer
  • Electrical Engineer
  • Infrastructure Engineer
  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Python Developer
  • Software Developer
  • UI/UX Developer

Technical Specialists:

  • Bioinformatician
  • Cloud Specialist
  • Computer Network Support
  • Security Specialist

Anyone who fits the eligibility requirements will be judged on the basis of their expression of interest and will be invited to submit an NLPNP application.
