Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador, a proposed immigrant route under the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) was announced recently by the provincial government. The new pathway is set to launch on January 2, 2021.
This pathway’s aim is to attract highly educated and skilled immigrants with expertise working in sectors such as technology, where local training and recruiting have been outpaced by increasing demand.
The Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Honourable Andrew Furey and, the Minister of Immigration, skills and Labor, the Honourable Gerry Byrne made the announcement on November 18, 2020 at the Emera Creativity Exchange at the Signal Hill Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
The new pathway has been requested by employers in high-growth sectors needing specialized expertise because their efforts to hire locally have not fulfilled the rising need for professional and qualified employees.
