The Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration offers the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship the ability to include key highlights and relevant information on immigration to Canada to Parliament and to Canadians. It also helps to provide crucial statistics on the milestones made in hosting Canada’s immigration.

Although the 2020 Annual Report on Immigration to Parliament reflects on Immigration outcomes obtained in 2019, the release takes place in the following calendar year to offer the ability for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to receive final details from the previous calendar year.

The Annual Report-2020 Highlights

Visitors, workers and students were issued 5,774,342 travel documents.

In Canada, 341,180 permanent immigrants have been admitted.

There were 68,647 individuals selected in 2019 by the Provincial Nominee Program, the largest number since the start of the program. This accounts for over 20% of all permanent resident admissions and directly assists provinces and regions in addressing their demands in the job market.

The number of refugees settled in the year 2019 stood at 30,087. This is the highest number than in other countries worldwide.

About 8,500 French-speaking permanent immigrants, with additional support for Francophone populations across Canada have been admitted to Canada outside Quebec.

In 2019, the percentage of Francophone admissions outside Quebec was 2.82. This was at 1.83 percent in 2018. In 2023, the target of Francophone admissions outside Quebec is set to achieve 4.40%.

IRCC has created, introduced and extended 10 separate GBA+ programs and initiatives.

More than 80% of Canada’s population growth increase was due to permanent and non-permanent immigrants.

The permanent residents’ admissions under the economic category were about 58%

The number of family members reunited was 91,311 marking a 7.2 percent rise from 2018.

The number of foreign students in Canada with valid study permits till 2019 was 827,586. In all, 402,427 were new study permits.

11,566 holders of a study permit received permanent residence in 2019.

63,020 individuals received permanent residency in 2019 who had temporary work permits.

Canada has the 7th highest number of foreign students studying in post-secondary education in 2017, relative to other OECD countries.

International students contribute to the growth of Canada and have a larger influence on the economy of Canada. Foreign students spend an estimated $21.6 billion on tuition and other costs in Canada in 2018.

The IRCC encourages the entry of foreign nationals pursuing temporary jobs to Canada.

In 2019, under the Temporary Foreign Worker Scheme, 98,310 persons received work permits. Whereas under the International Mobility Program 306,797 persons received work permits.
