Canada's Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino's message “Come to Canada” to talent around the world following the permanent and temporary resident visa suspensions announced yesterday by the United States.
President Donald Trump has signed a new Executive Order that would prohibit the entry of new green card holders and temporary foreign workers in the US by 2020. Trump has signed the order as he thinks it would help American workers who have lost their employment because of the COVID-19 pandemic find employment.
Since the onset of the coronavirus crisis, Minister Mendicino has made numerous remarks about Canada’s commitment to welcoming immigrants, temporary foreign workers and international students.
Although the pandemic has also affected Canada's economy, Mendicino and the Canadian government claim that continuing to host immigrants would improve the economy. In a new TV interview Mendicino reiterated these views.

Canada is indeed continuing to welcome new immigrants during the pandemic through Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), and other permanent resident pathways. Furthermore, temporary foreign workers are largely exempt from current travel restrictions in Canada, and tech workers can enter Canada via temporary visa pathways such as the Global Talent Stream.
Until the pandemic, following the record-setting year it had in 2019, Canada wanted to welcome another 341,000 new permanent residents in 2020. Canada has no plans in place for Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) and for international students.
Canada offers more than 100 combined permanent and temporary resident options for skilled workers wishing to pursue the country's economic opportunity.
Canada also offers various streams of immigration to temporary foreign workers and international students who wish to transform to permanent residence status in Canada.
